The eBay Giving Works program is scheduled to launch a nonprofit fundraising auction on December 5, 2013 to the benefit of the Tony Hawk Foundation. Skateboards donated by Tony Hawk and some of his well-known friends will be sold to the highest bidders.
The skateboards will also feature lyrics of the donors’ favorite songs, written on the items by their respective bands or musicians. The auction aims to raise money for the initiatives of the Tony Hawk Foundation, which supports and empowers today’s youth in various disadvantaged communities. The foundation will use the proceeds to fund the creation of public skateboarding parks to help keep kids away from mischief and encourage them to live healthy and active lifestyles.
The Tony Hawk Foundation also encourages the creation of skate parks to provide safe and legal areas where people can skate without the fear of getting arrested. Statistics show that the skateboarding community has grown to include 7.3 million participants in the United States and that there are roughly 3,500 public skate parks to accommodate them. With a lack of safe areas to skate, skaters take to the streets and parking lots, which are risky alternatives and, in many areas, against the law. After receiving thousands of emails from parents and children regarding this problem, Hawk responded by starting his foundation in 2002.
The skateboarding legend’s foundation is just one of the many organizations that eBay Giving Works supports by hosting nonprofit fundraising activities. Created shortly after the 9/11 terror attacks in the United States, with the name “Auction for America,” eBay Giving Works has since served as a means for eBay sellers and buyers to donate portions of their money in support of the charities of their choice. Moreover, the program also serves as a medium for nonprofit groups to further expand their reach and promote their initiatives.
In 2012 alone, buyers and sellers raised a total of $73 million for different causes. eBay Giving Works makes such achievements possible by allowing sellers to pledge a portion of their proceeds, ranging from 10% to 100%, to their chosen organizations. PayPal Giving Fund, eBay’s nonprofit partner, then collects the proceeds and distributes the donations to the specified charities. At the same time, the program enables shoppers to make purchases that will benefit an organization or cause they support.
