Donating to charity fundraising organizations is a great way to give back to the community. Nonprofit groups and volunteer organizations do so much to help the struggling communities all over the world, but they can’t do it alone. Every successful member of any community shares the responsibility of helping the less fortunate and contributing to the common good. WKBW, a Buffalo, NY news channel, narrates the story of a local resident who embodies this responsibility all too well:
One full grocery store, three minutes, anything you can fit in a cart, you take home for free. That is exactly what Hamburg resident Chuck Bullock won a chance to do. He donated to the United Way while checking out at Tops last month, and out of thousands of entries, he was chosen to win a shopping spree. Chuck chose his wife and good friend to shop for him.
Chuck and his team decided that they would donate a majority of their shopping items to charity. “Back in our early days, my wife and I have been together for 33 years, and it was tough, it was really tough. And right here in Buffalo was when people helped us out quite a bit, in the early 80s when we had our children. And now it’s time to give it back,” Bullock said.
Whether you donate goods, money, or volunteer work, giving back is truly beneficial not only for the recipients, but for you as well. Aside from making you feel good about yourself for the good that you’ve done, giving back is also good for your physical health. In a Canadian study, 85 percent of Ontarians who volunteered for charity rated their health as “good,” while only 79 percent of non-volunteers could say the same. Other studies show a link between giving back and increased self-esteem, with volunteers reporting better health and greater personal empowerment.
Perhaps during the coming holiday season, more than any other time, your hearts will go out to others. That being said, there are always those who are less fortunate than you are who will appreciate your help all year round.
